Day 26 June 1, 2011 Still in the Middle of Nowhere 42km

My hamstring was stiff again this morning.

Again, the day began with a moose crossing. I still haven’t seen a male moose though and I want to see antlers!

The morning run went pretty well until 24km after which I tried to limp to 30 but could only manage 27km. I stretched, iced, and stretched again. I also re-taped my hamstring in a similar way to the way it had been taped, but this time I used about twice as much tape and reinforced it with duct tape.

It worked way better than I thought it would and I was able to run 15km in the afternoon before it started bothering me at which point I decided it had probably had enough for the day.

I’ve been running along route 108 towards Plaster Rock NB. It’s a beautiful road through the forest, but a bit narrow with lots of logging trucks barrelling by me. There is also a lot of wildlife around as evidenced by all the moose we keep spotting.  There’s also no reception anywhere along the road until you get to Plaster Rock. So I told Mike that if he’s going to drive on ahead to leave me the bear spray.

He spent most of the day driving behind me but decided to drive to the top of a long hill to save on gas, and wait for me at the top. As he was driving up he says he thought about giving me the bear spray but figured it wouldn’t be that long. So he drives to the top of the hill, pulls over to the side of the road, and watches as a black bear walks out of the bushes onto the road. By the time I got to the top of the hill the bear had been scared off by passing trucks, although we waited and he came back out, sat on the side of the road, and ate berries.

We drove 40km into Plaster Rock to the local lake. It was warm and sunny so Mike and I went for a swim off a dock by the beach. When we got out we met a guy named Matt, a local who had just graduated from high school last year. He told us that no one has swam in that lake since he can remember because there are thousands of leeches a foot long swimming around. We asked him why there was a perfect swimming dock right there on the beach, to which he smiled and answered “for fishing”. As we walked back to our RV we passed a woman out walking her dog. She looked at our wet hair and towels and asked, “You didn’t go swimming in the lake did you? I don’t think anyone has swam in there for 10 years!” When we got back to our RV we noticed a big sign that said “Swimming Not Recommended”.

We were leech free though and happy that we hadn’t heard any of these warnings before as the water was warm and refreshing.

Best part of the day was still to come though as we stayed up late watching the Canucks beat the Bruins on my computer. Awesome!
